Check thecure.com. Finally updated with a press release about the singles. And some new info on the second single - it will be 'Freakshow' with 'All Kinds of Stuff' as the b-side. Strange that there is no mention of the release formats or the collector boxes (not true?). And even stranger, the official list of tour dates makes no mention of the May 28th show in San Jose (don't worry, probably just a mistake).
Update: There's a countdown clock and a sample of 'The Only One' on the front page of thecure.com. Also, Robert says he hopes that the new website will be up on May 13th.

I love the new song. It's derivative of High - shamefully so - but whatever. It's catchy as hell and growing on me every second! I love The Cure. :-)
ReplyDeletei'm sort of sad that those "new" songs from the european concerts are actually going to be the singles from this album. i mean, on the one hand, i've always liked cure album tracks much better than singles with a few exceptions, but these songs seem weaker than most.
ReplyDeleteof course, i'll have to wait to hear studio versions (hopefully with re-written lyrics) before passing judgment.
anticipating bsides more then the singles. I just checked to see what seats were still available for Hollywood bowl and nothing comes up. Just last week there was a single seat mid way back in the center. Anybody know what (if any) shows are actually sold out?

To me it sounds like a mix between WISH and THE CURE. Raw, but with a fun, pop-ish melody.

ReplyDeleteI don´t know what to think about that the first two singles are pop, reminds me of the Wish era.
I think there must be a balance between doom and gloom and poppier stuff, but the most of CURE fans we surely prefer darker tunes.
I do love upbeat songs but I wish an album as Disintegration. I think this is the right time for a new CURE album like that.
In the meantime and while allthe doubts are resolved, there´s no much more to do than to feel EXCITEMENT and why not?, listen the sampler over and over again...until you love it.

I too like the sound of the new single. Does sound reminiscent of Wish-era singles.
ReplyDeleteJust from that little snippet, I've already got a lot more hope for this album that the last one. I think they realized the nu-metal approach, was the wrong approach. I know using Ross Robinson never sat well with Simon from the get-go.
ReplyDeleteThe Only One is a good single choice, but Freak Show? No offense meant to Robert, but that's the weakest new song that they've been playing, and seems like a bad single choice. Oh, and the title of the b-side? Um, whether or not the song is good remains to be seen, but All Kinds of Stuff sounds like Robert was digging at the bottom of the barrel.

Maybe there should be a new poll. which song is worse, freakshow or friday im in love? does this mean that freakshow will be the next radio hit? or maybe that should be the new poll. will the cure ever have another radio hit? and by hit I mean make the billboard top 20.

ReplyDeleteHey guys, I was dismayed to see that The Cure have an opening band this time around (at least in Boston). I've always hated having to wade through an opening band before the main even. Have any of you hear of "64days of static"? What's the deal?

ReplyDeleteAs i mentionned in my review of Copenhagen show on COF, go and see 65Days, they are excellent, and got better as the European tour went on....Easy reference would be Mogwai..They are a very friendly bunch too and play their music LOUD..Don't miss them , in my opinion..

ReplyDeleteI felt the same way, perfect.murder. It's so obvious that the band has little or nothing to do with the official site. I wonder if the band ever even looks at it? The fact that the Festival DVD advert was there for 3 years leads me to conclude that the site was essentially abandoned. I don't know what it would be like to be a busy rock star but I'd like to believe that I'd provide periodic updates to my website. I don't mean essays or anything much, but a simple, "Hi guys, we recorded some great stuff this week and I can't wait for you to hear it!" would at least enable my fans to know that I cared. As we've all said from time to time, Craig's site is the real "official" site.

ReplyDeleteI got to hear this live at Berlin and London and neither were that convincing but I have to say that the studio sample sounds excellent. I dont know how but Robert always manages to do things with his voice in studio that would give you goose pimples even on the popier tracks and Simons Bass Line sounds awesome.Im so looking forward to the album now.
ReplyDeleteThat is why I've always felt The Cure's pop songs are always better on studio versions; same with the mellower sombre pieces like "Trust", "Apart", etc -- because Robert's vocals in studio can be subtle and he can do all kinds of high pitched, gorgeous singing. Live, he's exhausted and resorts to shouting to convey emotion, as he did on the 2004 album, which is why I hate Ross Robinson.
ReplyDeleteMusically The Cure is good live, but vocally, it's far better on studio albums; that's true of virtually every band.
Better in the studio? Perhaps for some songs, but I can't agree that all of The Cure's songs sound better in the studio. The rendition that they did of All Cats Are Grey during the Toronto Dream Tour show was spellbinding, and Labyrinth during the Toronto Curiosa show, wow. It's a crime that the studio version of that song wasn't released as a single. It's arena rock at its' best.
ReplyDeleteI agree, however, about From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea. Both of the times that I've seen it played live, the band looked like they were just going through the motions, and didn't put much energy into it. Perhaps it'll be different now that Porl is back, because his work on Show was amazing. Note: I'm not meaning to take anything away from Perry with that statement.
I think the song snippet on the official site sounds very promising. Sure it sounds like "High Jr." but a nod to Wish-era Cure can't be a bad thing can it? I have no problem at all with a few poppy songs. Both Wish and Disintegration had pop elements and I rank them as the Cure's best two albums.
ReplyDeleteI've begun to have mixed feelings about the new song. It's just too shamelessly derivative. It's catchy, yes, and not bad at all - just so SAMEY. It's better than that counterfeit Cure song Taking Off, to be sure, but not better than EOTW, which I felt took the band in a slightly new direction. And Before Three was of course the best pop song on The Cure, and it's unfathomable to me that they did not release it as a single and instead released the abominable Taking Off and slightly less abominable alt.end.
ReplyDeleteI do have hope for the album, though, beaause I'm pretty damn sure Robert will throw in some delicious dark songs. I do wish he'd just make a dark post-punk album, but I guess those days are over.
On another note: I think WMS was the last truly experimental album the Cure will ever make. It's unfairly lambasted, methinks - it's much fresher than anything the Cure have done since. Bloodflowers is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but WMS is more innovative.
